A difficult thing to do. Some of us think that we’ve forgiven others who have wronged us, but God knows what is in your heart. True forgiveness is to embrace the other person as if nothing has ever happened. Hug them as tight as ever. But sometimes, attitudes arises:

“Love them from afar”

“Forgive but don’t forget”.

God says this attitude is not forgiveness.

Matthew 6:14-15
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

I thought I understood true forgiveness. But I didn’t. I’d say to people ‘yeah I’ve forgiven that person, I’ve accepted their apology’. But I knew in my heart I did not. Whenever their face was on my social media feed, I’d get this overwhelming feeling of annoyance. How was I meant to allow the Holy Spirit to live in me if I still harboured this unforgiveness? The bible is plain in what it says “…but if you do not forgive others sins, your Father will not forgive your sins”. Simple. How could I thank God for forgiving my sins if I can’t forgive others?

I’ve realised the more I grow as a Christian and have a stronger relationship with God, my heart is becoming more and more forgiving. I can’t keep letting trivial things bring my spirit down, and nor should you. Harbouring that energy of unforgiveness, does more harm to yourself.

Whilst writing this message, I went on Facebook and saw a video about getting closer to God through prayer, where they used an orange to demonstrate the point. When God is able work inside you spiritually, great things come from it. But barriers can occur, one being unforgiveness (the orange skin, tough and bitter). It can block you from blessings and growing in your relationship with God. We mustn’t allow unforgiveness, however hard it may be, to fester and be the means of blocking blessings in our lives. God wants to reach you, just like when you eat an orange, you want to eat the sweet contents, not the peel. The journey is not supposed to be easy, but let go and let God.

You’re in control of that.
